§ Databases · Key-value

Redis backups, natively.

The server's own RDB snapshot streamed to Xtic, with a BGSAVE fallback where replication commands are blocked. The password travels in REDISCLI_AUTH, never -a.

What Xtic runs

redis-cli
redis-cli --no-auth-warning --rdb -

Shown with placeholders. Credentials never appear on a command line: they reach the tool through the environment, a file descriptor or a short-lived file in memory.

Restore paths

  • Stop, place dump.rdb (moving an AOF directory aside, never deleting it), start — in a maintenance window
  • Containers: the RDB is written into the volume through a temporary container
  • Selected keys: the RDB is loaded into a temporary server and the keys migrated

Verification

RDB header magic on every run; redis-check-rdb in deep verification. Every artifact is also hashed, and the stored copy is read back and compared before the run counts as verified.

Version rule

RDB files only move forward: Redis 7.4+ writes RDB v12, which 7.2 and Valkey cannot load.

Good to know

  • BGSAVE forks the server; leave memory headroom for copy-on-write
  • Cluster mode: one artifact per node, restored onto the same slot layout
  • Licence and editions: No backup feature gates.
